by Patricia Volante, published in March 2018 (Estuary Publishing).
Rossi’s The Story of Southend’s Favourite Ice Cream follows the lives of the Rossi clan through several generations and reveals the hardship and ambition involved in emigrating and building a business from scratch. It follows their struggles in the war years when Italians nationals were being treated with suspicion, and yet most of the Rossi children served in the British armed forces. The story continues right up to the modern day where the brand is still a leading name in Southend and loved by locals, day trippers and even has fans as far away as Australia and New Zealand.
The author Patricia Volante, a retired teacher, began working weekends in the Rossi’s Temperance Bar in 1959, aged 15, while continuing her schooling and it became a holiday job when home from college. When Patricia married Fernando Rossi, the son of the Agostino, she began to collect stories of how the business originated from the tenements in Glasgow and of the Rossi clan back in Italy.
“I started this book originally simply a few pages and something for the family to enjoy and for my grandson Enzo to learn about his roots. But when I approached Estuary Publishing for advice, I was encouraged to consider publishing it as a book to share with the people of Southend as so many people remember going for a Rossi and it is still a very popular treat,” said Patricia.
The publisher has been surprised by the response to the book. Despite only being in print a few days, the book has attracted significant attention, explains Estuary Publishing’s director Audrey Snee.
“Word spread very quickly about the book as soon as we shared the cover image on social media even before we have officially launched the book. We have had to move faster than anticipated stocking local bookshops and informing the media about forthcoming events as orders began to come in quite quickly. It has been an exhilarating experience and proof that the people of Southend really do love a Rossi!”
